Challenge The San Diepo/Tijuana area, with 5 million people equally divided by an international border, provides an ideal proving ground for Experanza's creative projects. It is an area of enormous challenge and potential where the wealthy and poor of different cultures live side by side. Due to tremendous growth, new communities are being formed every day, and old communities must adapt to rapid change. In the midst of growth and change, Experanza is there, developing Model Solutions for worldwide application. Work groups from service clubs, churches, business and college organizations support these efforts by raising funds and providing labor. History Organized in 1984 as a community-based group dedicated to helping the poor, Esperanza International has grown to include a corps of dedicated volunteer consultants who combine creative concepts with hard work, to form community development projects. Mission Esperanza is a non-profit, non-sectarian, charitable corporation, dedicated to wmpowering the poor to help themselves bridging existing needs with available resources. The Philosophy All projects are based on self-help principles. Esperanza assists communities that have the potential for becoming self-sustaining. The goal is to plant the seeds, provide assistance as requested, then step back and let the community take its own course. As projects are proven to work, these new solutions are spread to others through the International Institute for Grasroots Development, the educational division of Esperanza. Esperanza International serve the poor and the homeless with self-help, community-based projects which bring about lasting change. Esperanza means HOPE.
To aid community development projects in Mexico, Esperanza created a self-help building system which enables unskilled laborers to construct permanent structures out of prefabricated concrete components. This system has been successfully used to build school classrooms and cafeterias, houses for needy families, and community centers which facilitate child care programs, medical dispensaries, thrift stores and vocational training classes. Esperanza has also facilitated the development of water and waste disposal systems, banks, and a full service medical clinic. In the United States, Esperanzas efforts have focused on developing affordable housing for low income families. Community Organization efforts have resulted in the upgrading of rural homeless encampments, the establishment of community operated stores, and the relocation of families with small children to permanent housing. |
